David & Goliath

David was just a young boy who tended to his family’s sheep and stayed at home. His brothers went off to battle with Saul’s army, the Israelites.
David was part of God’s army. He knew that God was on his side. God is more powerful than any person on earth.

Memory Verse

For the battle is the Lord’s. ~1 Samuel 17:47

A giant named Goliath tormented God’s people with threats of war. Goliath had challenged Saul’s whole army. But all of the Israelites were too scared.

David was called by God to defeat the army’s greatest enemy, Goliath.  He knew he could defeat Goliath by trusting in God and relying on God’s power.

Let’s make a shield to help overcome our fears!

Materials:

Directions

On the shield, draw something that you are afraid of. Cut the shield out and glue it onto the paper plate.

Below the shield write these words:

For the battle is the Lord’s.
      ~1 Samuel 17:47

On the back of your plate, tape a 1"x 6" strip of construction paper as a trap for you to hold your shield.

Memory Verse

David said, "…I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty." ~ Samuel 17:45

David had faith in God and was able to defeat Goliath. He took his shepherd’s stick, a sling and five smooth stones to fight Goliath with. He put one of the stones into the sling and slung it. The stone hit Goliath in the forehead and killed him instantly.

Let’s make Stone Of Courage rocks!

Materials

Directions

Color the stars and happy faces, then cut them all out. (Optionally – you can decorate them with glitter) Use cotton swabs to paint the white glue onto a rock and place a colored picture on it. Repeat for the remainder of rocks and pictures.

Pick one of your favorite Stone of Courage rocks to keep for yourself to remind you that if you have faith in God, you are a winner too. Take the rest of your Stone of Courage rocks and give one to each friend that you share with the story of David and Goliath. Make sure to tell your friend that the Stone of Courage rock is to remind them that if they have faith in God, they are a winner too.

Memory Verse

Trust in the Lord and do good. ~Psalm 37:3

God provides all good things for us, even today. When we trust in him, we can do good too, just like David.

David trusted God to help him so he didn’t need a lot of weapons. God gave David the courage to defeat Goliath. We can trust in God to help us, too, even when things look scary.

  • How did David defeat Goliath?
  • How many stones did David bring with him?
  • How many did he use?
  • How can we overcome our fears?
  • How has God helped you?
